Summer Media Oasis and the Silly Season

Each year in Slovenia, when temperatures rise and people switch to summer mode, something unusual happens – we enter a period affectionately called the "silly season." This is a time when the media search for stories to fill newspaper pages and TV minutes, as it seems that significant news takes a back seat to the summer lull.

This phenomenon isn't limited to Slovenia; it is also known in other countries. In the English-speaking world, it's called the "silly season," while in the German-speaking world, it is referred to as "Sauregurkenzeit" (the cucumber season). The name refers to the time when cucumbers ripen and when, due to a lack of serious news, the media often report on trivial or sensational topics.

Is it true that people consume less media in the summer, leading to a change in the quality of news? Research and anecdotal evidence suggest that there is indeed a shift in people's media consumption habits during the summer. Many go on vacation, focusing on relaxation and outdoor activities, which leads to less interest in daily news. As a result, the media often adapt by offering lighter content, suitable for quick reading during the summer holidays.

However, it's not all that simple. The silly season offers an opportunity for the media to explore and cover topics that might not receive attention during the hectic workweeks. Light-hearted stories about local events, cultural happenings, unusual adventures, or interesting personalities can bring freshness to the otherwise monotonous media flow.

It's also true that the digital age doesn't entirely align with the classic theory of the silly season. Access to news is easier and faster than ever before, meaning that significant news can still reach us during the summer. Although summer entertainments often overshadow serious news, the media are still capable of responding quickly to important events. For instance, last year's catastrophic floods, fires, and other natural disasters required the media to react practically overnight. And to their credit, they did an excellent job!

During the silly season, there is an opportunity for the media to explore and cover topics that they might not have time to address during hectic workweeks. Light-hearted stories about local events, cultural activities, unusual adventures, or interesting personalities can bring a fresh perspective to the otherwise monotonous media stream.

Back to the topic. The silly season presents an interesting dilemma. On one hand, we desire lighter and more relaxing content that matches our summer mood. On the other hand, we still expect the media to keep an eye on world events and inform us about important happenings.

Ultimately, the silly season may be a reminder that sometimes we need to take a break from the constant stream of news and focus on things that relax and make us happy. During this time, we have the opportunity to reflect on our relationship with the media and consider how we can better balance our informational and personal needs. Thus, the silly season can also serve as a time for self-reflection, relaxation, and preparation for the new challenges that await us in the coming months.

The silly season is therefore more than just a period of media lull; it is an opportunity to discover new perspectives and enjoy a slower pace of life. It is a time when we can indulge in summer joys while still staying connected to world events, but in a more relaxed manner, suited to the summer spirit.

The summer season also offers the media an opportunity to explore deeper and less covered topics that are often overlooked in regular circumstances. This could include stories about local heroes, hidden natural spots, culinary specialties, or traditional customs that might not otherwise take centre stage. In this way, the media can provide their audiences with richer and more diverse content that goes beyond everyday news.
